A former 1980s Air Force Base youth center on Horry-Georgetown Technical College’s Grand Strand Campus now houses the Nursing & Health Sciences Institute, a next-generation learning environment built for the evolving demands of healthcare education. The renovation converted the dated structure into a state-of-the-art facility that blends hands-on training, collaboration, and innovation. A new second floor expands the existing building, while a two-story glass enclosure at the entry brings natural light into public spaces and student study areas.

The 7,000-square-foot expansion adds flexible learning environments designed to replicate real-world healthcare settings. The first floor includes eight high-fidelity simulation rooms, low-fidelity skills labs, a technology innovation lab, and an EMT/EMS lab, allowing students to practice clinical techniques, strengthen patient communication, and develop team-based problem-solving skills. The second floor provides faculty touchdown offices, student study areas, and classrooms. The design is a collaboration between Quackenbush Architects + Planners and Perkins&Will. The project has achieved Two Green Globes certification.
