Q+ Celebrates 10 Years

Quackenbush Architects + Planners, celebrating its 10-year anniversary throughout the year 2014, has experienced exponential growth since being founded in 2004 in Columbia, South Carolina by Douglas Quackenbush AIA LEED AP.

Over the past decade, the full-service firm has consistently taken a collaborative, community-focused approach in planning and designing eco-friendly projects for a wide range of clients. In the process, the company has earned a position as one of the leading architecture firms in the state.

While the industry has evolved in many ways since the firm's inception, Quackenbush, the company's president, has observed an increased emphasis on sustainable building practices across the board.

"High performance/sustainable buildings are becoming the new normal, not just the exception," notes Quackenbush. "This is a very exciting development for our firm, because it means our services and expertise become more and more valuable."

Rapid technological advancements have streamlined many processes for the firm, as well. Computer models allow for strikingly realistic design views, daylight studies and the refinement of energy calculations. "In 2004, we used computers to create drawings," Quackenbush says. "Today, we virtually 'build' our buildings before we ever break ground."

Most of the company's clients have an educational mission. "We primarily design K-12 schools, universities and colleges, and we enjoy this work immensely," says Quackenbush. "These projects serve the community, support significant missions and purposes, and bring us together with clients who offer a wealth of insight into these aims."

Long-term plans for the firm include growing an already-solid regional client base, consistently expanding the team's expertise and experience, and continuing to contribute to the community through conscientious, forward-thinking planning and design.
