Precision Machining
Midlands Technical College
Columbia, SC
Completed
2005
Following a significant transformation of the former “Tool and Die” program, this Precision Machining facility on Midlands Technical College’s Beltline campus makes a clear statement about the college’s commitment to a high-tech professional shop environment. Together with a concurrent Student Services Addition, the building creates an edge to a new student-centered courtyard on the northern boundary of campus, transforming what was once a neglected back door into an active face.
The building is organized into two interlocking masses: one housing the shop and support spaces, the other classrooms and administrative support. The shop offers flexibility of use and equipment arrangements, with clerestory windows above providing natural light while freeing valuable wall space for equipment.
Represents the experience of Doug Quackenbush as Principal-in-Charge and Barb Haller as Project Architect while at another firm.
