The Center for Knowledge anchors a new, modern complex that stands on the original site of the aged E.L. Wright Middle School and the former Center for Knowledge. Despite the challenge of building on an occupied campus, the project creates a more unified and compact learning environment, bringing 21st-century learning principles together with a significant gain in high-quality green space. Bold color and large picture windows in every classroom define the elementary experience and distinguish it from the middle school it shares the building with, while the Center establishes the southern anchor of the overall complex.

The 230,000-square-foot design organizes three three-story academic wings around a central circulation spine that connects classrooms to the arts, gymnasium, library, dining, and administrative spaces. The academic wings read as a series of simple “slipping bars” that reduce the overall scale of the school while clarifying wayfinding. Between the wings, secure outdoor courtyards and organic playscapes create flexible environments for outdoor learning and play. The project is designed in collaboration with Perkins&Will K-12 Studio.
