E.L. Wright Middle School
Richland School District Two
Columbia, SC
Completed
2022
Built on the original site of the former E.L. Wright Middle School, this replacement campus transforms a constrained, occupied site into a more unified, compact learning environment with significantly more green space. The design incorporates 21st-century learning principles while addressing the logistical challenge of constructing a new school around an active one.
The 170,000-square-foot complex is organized into three three-story academic wings linked by a central circulation spine that connects to arts, gymnasium, library, dining, and administrative spaces. The massing features a collection of “slipping bars” that break down the building’s scale, creating secure outdoor courtyards and organic playscapes between the wings for outdoor learning. The Center for Knowledge anchors the southern end, distinguished by bold color and large picture windows serving elementary-aged children. The project is designed in collaboration with Perkins&Will K-12 Studio.
