Developed as a partnership between the City of Columbia and Richland County, this animal shelter expansion serves both city and county residents from a single location off Shop Road. The design adopts a barn-like vernacular with lap siding, trim details, and a two-tiered sloped metal roof that fits naturally into the surrounding context while providing a dignified, welcoming environment for animals and visitors.

The 8,000-square-foot addition doubles the existing facility’s feline holding area and houses over 60 new dog kennels along two enclosed, heated, and ventilated corridors. Each kennel connects to covered, screened outdoor dog runs, and open end bays with clerestories deliver natural ventilation and daylight throughout.
